01 / ARTISTRY

Four expressions
of porcelain.

Pattern, light, blue and gold.
Four different ways to look at a work,
from its smallest detail to its complete form.

PAHUA / SURFACE DETAIL

I / 扒花 · PAHUA

A surface
worth looking into.

Fine scrolling lines sit beneath a larger arrangement of flowers and birds. Close up, the yellow surface becomes a field of small marks; from a distance, the main decoration reads as a whole.

Porcelain.
Seen through light.

Against a dark setting, the repeated pattern becomes luminous. Light picks out the small shapes in the white cup, making the pattern part of the way the object is seen.

III / 青花 · BLUE & WHITE

Drawing in blue.

Blue decoration moves across the covered bowl and accompanying cups. Each piece has its own form, while the shared colour and related motifs bring the group together.

GILDING / LINE & CONTRAST

IV / 描金 · GILDING

Dark glaze, gold lines.

Gold-coloured ornament stands out against the dark surface. The dragon motif and fine border follow the bowl’s curve, drawing attention to both the decoration and the shape beneath it.

02 / MANUFACTURING

At the workbench.
Inside the making.

01 / FLORAL DECORATION

A red-ground
lidded vessel.

Flowers and scrolling forms extend across the body, shoulder and cover. The larger vessel shows how a dense pattern follows a changing surface.

02 / LANDSCAPE DECORATION

A landscape
across two curves.

Blue landscape decoration wraps around the two rounded parts of the vessel. The complete view reveals how the painted scene meets the form.
